What is Domain Name – A domain name is the address that people type into the address bar of a browser to find your website, often also called a “web address”. Any registered domain name is unique to whoever buys it and cannot be used by anyone else, as it functions on the Internet in the same way as a home address in the physical world.

For example, Taj Mahal or Burj Khalifa has an address through which we can go to them and they have only one address in the world.

Similarly, galaxytechtips.com and galaxytechtips.in are domains, and by using them we can easily access their website and it's content.

Why do you need a domain name?

Any business, organization or individual needs a domain to establish their presence online or create a distinct identity. The combination of domain names, websites and email addresses creates a unique identity online. It also helps build credibility, raise awareness, and protect your trademarks and copyrights for your brand, organization or business around the world.

Difference between Domain and Subdomain

A subdomain is a part or subset of the main domain. When you register or buy a main domain from a company, you have full rights over that domain and you can create subdomains of it.

For example “galaxytechtips.com” is a master domain and “blog.galaxytechtips.com” is a subdomain who created using the main domain.

Types of Domain Name

Top Level Domain (TLD) refers to the last part of the domain name or suffix . There is a limited list of predetermined suffixes which include:

  • .com – Commercial Business (Most Common TLD)
  • .org – For Organization (usually, non-profit)
  • .net – For Network Organization
  • .info – For general information
  • .edu – For Educational Institutions
  • .gov – For Government Agencies
  • .mil – For military use

TLDs are classified into two main categories: general (Generic) top level domains (gTLDs) and country-code top level domains (cTLDs).

Generic Top Level Domain (gTLD) A generic (General) top level domain name that identifies the domain class to which it belongs (.com, .net, .info, .org, .edu, etc.) .

A Country Code Top-Level domain (ccTLD) is a two-letter domain extension, such as .in, .uk  or .us , whom specially assigned to a country, geographic location, or region.

New Top Level Domain (nTLD) refers to new top level domain names designed to brand, organizations and services, as they are more customized, flexible and relevant. Examples of nTLDs include “.blog”, “.app”, “.tech”, “.tips”, etc.

How to choose a Domain name

Keep the name simple and short – Long and complex domain names are difficult to remember, so choose a name that is easy to remember. Choose a maximum 14 digit name, not more than that.

Choose a name that is easy to type and speak – if people have difficulty in speaking or pronouncing it correctly, people will have difficulty remembering the name and it will harm your brand.

Choose a name that reflects what your business does – You should choose a domain name that describes your business while making sure that the name is not too big. For example : hostinger.com, it is small but also indicating about hosting business.

Choose a domain name that can be convert into a Brand later – you shouldn't use numbers and hyphens in your domain name as these are very difficult to remember, it would be like taking the headache of coercion. Also choose words that can be changed to brand later.

Avoid names that match any of the existing brands and if you think that you will achieve quick success with a name matching a brand then you are wrong. A name similar to any brand can land you in trouble as their copyright and trademark are protected by the government.

Use these top level domains (TLDs) – You should first search for the most popular extension “.com” if it is not available then select “.net” or any popular extension. And if your business targets a specific country, then it is advisable to use a country-code top level domain. For example, if your business targets India, you should select the domain name “.in”.

Where to buy a domain name?

To register any domain name, you have to pay an annual fee. When the registration period is over, you will be given the option to renew. If you do not renew the domain, it will be made available to others.

Although there are many registrars in the web world, Domain.com and Namecheap are probably one of the most popular. When you buy hosting from Hostinger, they give free domain in Pro plans. If you want to buy domain for business or blog then there is no better option than Hostinger because they provide domain free with hosting. Using their hosting, you can easily create a business website or WordPress blog.
